If you are planning a holiday in Crete and wondering whether Almyrida is worth visiting for diving, the short answer is: yes, absolutely. Almyrida is one of the best-kept secrets in Mediterranean diving — a small, relaxed village on the northern coast of Crete with direct beach access, exceptional water clarity, and a collection of dive sites that range from dramatic sea caves to exclusive wrecks.

Here is everything you need to know about diving in Almyrida.

Where Is Almyrida?

Almyrida is a small coastal village in the Chania region of northern Crete, approximately 25 minutes from Chania city centre. It sits on a sheltered bay with calm, clear water and a relaxed atmosphere — making it an ideal base for diving.

Unlike the busier resort towns of Crete, Almyrida has retained its village character. The beach is uncrowded, parking is free, and the sea is right on your doorstep.

What Are the Dive Sites Like Around Almyrida?

Almyrida offers access to a varied and impressive range of dive sites, all within a short boat ride from the beach.

The Elephant Cave

The most famous dive site in the area is the Elephant Cave — a vast sea cave stretching approximately 150 metres into the cliffside. The cave has an underwater entrance of around 20 metres, after which divers surface into a breathable air chamber inside the cave. Maximum depth is around 10 metres. The cave is home to stalactites, stalagmites, and occasionally Mediterranean monk seals (Monachus monachus). Kefi Divers has a unique connection to this site — our boat captain Sotiris is the nephew of the first diver to enter the cave underwater, back in 1999.

The Tugboat Nestor

The Tugboat Nestor, scuttled in April 2025, was the first wreck placed in the Apokoronas Diving Park at Ombros Gialos, just east of Almyrida. The wreck and the park's artificial reef structures are already in place, but the park is not yet open for normal recreational diving. Once it officially opens, it will offer a fascinating wreck diving experience in clear, calm water — ideal for certified divers looking for something different.

Reefs and Underwater Formations

The northern coast of Crete around Almyrida is lined with vibrant reefs, rocky formations, and diverse marine life including grouper, moray eels, octopus, and a wide variety of reef fish.

What Is the Water Like in Almyrida?

Almyrida benefits from some of the best diving conditions in Crete:

Water temperature: 22°C in spring, up to 28°C in summer

Visibility: typically 15–25 metres, often more

Sea conditions: the sheltered bay means calm water for most of the season

Diving season: year-round, with the best conditions from May to October

Is Almyrida Good for Beginner Divers?

Yes. Almyrida is an excellent location for first-time divers. The calm, sheltered bay provides ideal conditions for learning, and the gradual seabed means there is no need to go deep to see interesting marine life.

Kefi Divers runs Discover Scuba Diving experiences directly from Almyrida beach — no experience or certification required, minimum age 10. Groups are kept small (maximum 2 students per instructor) to ensure every beginner gets proper attention and support.

Is Almyrida Good for Experienced Divers?

Absolutely. Experienced divers will find plenty to explore around Almyrida, from the Elephant Cave to nearby reefs and the historic Junkers 52 wreck. As the new Apokoronas Diving Park develops, the Tugboat Nestor and HMS Folegandros will become exciting wreck destinations for certified divers. Kefi Divers also has experience assisting marine archaeologists in mapping shipwrecks along the northern coast of Crete — a testament to the depth of history beneath these waters.

Guided dives are led by PADI instructors Matthew Shahid (IDC Staff Instructor #425811) and Titouan Gerard (PADI Instructor #522402), both with extensive local knowledge.
