April marked the soft start of our 2026 dive season in Almyrida. After a calmer-than-usual March, the water is warming, the wind is settling, and the reefs are coming back to life.

Looking ahead to May
Surface temperature averaged 19°C with light north-westerlies most days. Sea state was calm to slight (Beaufort 2–3) on roughly 23 of 30 days, with two days lost to weather mid-month.
Visibility climbed steadily through the month — 15m in the first week, 20–25m by week three, and a peak of 28m on a flat-calm day off Koutalas Reef. Spring storms still occasionally stirred fine sediment in shallow sandy patches under 8m.
Water temperature ranged 16°C at depth (25m+) to 18°C at the safety stop. We ran the month in 5mm full suits with hood and gloves; comfortable for 50–60 minute dives.
The big return story this month was octopus — den activity picked up sharply after the 10th. We logged consistent sightings of cuttlefish (early courtship behaviour visible by week four), several large dusky groupers at Elephant Cave, and the first barracuda schools of the season at Koutalas. No tuna or amberjack passes yet — those typically follow in May.
Almyrida shore: easy entries, 18–25m viz. Elephant Cave: protected and consistently 22m+ all month. Koutalas Reef: best viz days, peak schooling activity. Junkers Wreck: a few weather days early on, then excellent late-April conditions.
Expect water to push past 19°C and visibility to settle into the 25m range as thermal stratification stabilises. Tuna and amberjack passes typically begin late May — we'll track and report next month.
