Spring is the season most local divers quietly recommend. The water is cooler, but the visibility, the calm sea, and the lack of crowds make March through May one of the most rewarding windows of the year.

March, April and May offer a steady warming curve. Air temperatures climb from 15°C to the low 20s, and the sea reliably follows about a month behind. The Etesian winds haven't started yet, so most days are diveable.
Spring is famous for its visibility. Once the winter storms pass — usually by mid-March — the water is exceptionally clear: typically 20–30m, with peaks beyond 30m on calm days. Plankton blooms can briefly reduce viz in late May.
Expect 15°C in March, 17–18°C through April, and 19–20°C by late May. We dive in 5mm full suits with hood and gloves throughout spring; a 7mm semi-dry is appropriate for early March or for cold-prone divers.
Octopus and cuttlefish activity ramps up through the season — courtship and den-building are highly visible by April. Resident grouper, moray, scorpionfish and seahorses are easy to find. The first pelagic passes (barracuda, then amberjack and tuna) usually begin in late April or May.
Koutalas Reef and Elephant Cave perform exceptionally well in spring thanks to protection from the prevailing winds. The Junkers wreck off Rethymno is also at its clearest before the summer crowds arrive.
Spring is the best season for divers who prefer calm, quiet conditions and the best visibility windows. Book early-April through mid-May for the best balance of warmth, viz, and biology.
