Planning your trip
June through August is peak diving season. Surface temperatures sit around 28–30°C, the sea is generally calm in the mornings, and water temperatures climb steadily from 22°C in early June to 26°C+ by late August.
Visibility is consistently excellent — typically 25–30m, with frequent 35m days off Koutalas and Elephant Cave. The Etesian (meltemi) winds can pick up in the afternoons in July, so we run most boat dives before lunch.
A 3mm full suit is plenty from late June onward; a shorty works for shallower dives in August. Surface intervals are warm — bring sun protection and water.
Summer brings the full picture: octopus, cuttlefish, moray, grouper, scorpionfish, nudibranchs in the shallows, and pelagic passes of barracuda, amberjack and bonito. Night dives are particularly active.
Almyrida shore and Koutalas Reef are dependable all summer. Elephant Cave is best in the morning. The Junkers wreck off Rethymno and the SS Minnewaska off Cape Sideros are at their most accessible in calm summer seas.
If you want guaranteed warm water and minimum gear, summer is your season. Book mornings to avoid the afternoon meltemi, and look at June or early July to avoid the August crowds.
