Kefi Divers

Elephant Cave

Dive one of Crete's most legendary dive sites and explore a 150 metre sea cave filled with ancient formations and fossilised elephant remains.

Discover the Elephant Cave, Kefi Divers' flagship dive site and one of the most renowned dive sites in Crete. Even PADI describes it as probably the best dive site Crete has to offer. Located along the spectacular coastline near Chania, the Elephant Cave is a 150 metre-long sea cave filled with ancient stalactites and stalagmites, as well as the fossilised remains of an extinct dwarf elephant that once lived on Crete. We depart from Almyrida, the closest harbour to the Elephant Cave, giving you a shorter journey to the site and more time to enjoy the experience. The experience always includes two dives. The first is at Lighthouse Wall, followed by the main event, the Elephant Cave. For the cave dive, we enter the water and descend towards the cave entrance, which ranges from approximately 4 to 9 metres deep. We enter the cave at around 8 metres and begin exploring its full length. Inside, you'll swim through the underwater passage surrounded by spectacular rock formations, stalactites and stalagmites. Along the way, you'll see the fossilised elephant remains beneath the water before continuing deeper into the cave. At the end, you'll surface inside the cave's natural air chamber. Here, you can take in the impressive formations surrounding you and see the fossilised remains again, this time from above the water.
