Yes — you can absolutely dive in Crete without any prior experience. No certification, no training, no swim-up lifetime underwater. Thousands of first-time divers take their first breath underwater in Crete every year, and the island is calm, clear Mediterranean waters make it one of the best places in the world to try scuba diving for the first time.

Here is everything you need to know before you go.

What Is Discover Scuba Diving?

Discover Scuba Diving (DSD) is a PADI-recognised introductory experience designed specifically for people who have never dived before. It is not a course — there is no exam, no certification to earn, and no homework. It is simply a guided underwater experience led by a qualified PADI instructor, from start to finish.

At Kefi Divers, our Discover Scuba Diving experience takes place in the warm, sheltered waters of Almyrida, on the northern coast of Crete. The session begins on land with a short briefing covering the basics: how to breathe underwater, how to equalise pressure in your ears, and a few simple hand signals. Then you enter the water with your instructor by your side the entire time.

Most first-time divers are surprised by how natural it feels. Within minutes the regulator stops feeling strange, and breathing under water becomes second nature.

What Are the Requirements?

Very few. To try scuba diving in Crete with Kefi Divers, you need to:

Be at least 10 years old

Be comfortable in the water (you do not need to be a strong swimmer)

Complete a short PADI medical questionnaire before the dive

Not be pregnant (snorkelling is a great alternative)

There is no upper age limit. We regularly dive with guests in their 60s and 70s.

If you answer yes to any medical questions on the questionnaire, a doctor's clearance may be required — but for most healthy adults, this is not necessary.

Is It Safe?

Yes. Safety is built into every part of the experience.

At Kefi Divers, we keep our Discover Scuba Diving ratios to a maximum of 2:1 — two students per instructor. This means your instructor is always close, always watching, and always ready to help. We use regulating service, professionally-maintained equipment — wetsuit, BCD, regulator, tank, mask, fins, and weights — all serviced on or before use.

Every session begins with a thorough briefing, and your instructor is trained in emergency procedures and first aid. We also dive sites we use for first-timers are sheltered, shallow, and chosen specifically for their calm conditions.

What Will I See?

Crete's underwater world is genuinely spectacular, even at shallow depths. On a typical Discover Scuba Diving experience with Kefi Divers, you might see:

Octopuses tucked into rocky crevices

Groupers hovering near the reef

Moray eels peeking out from their hiding spots

Colourful wrasse darting between rocks

Sea bream, damselfish, and the occasional scorpionfish

The visibility in Crete's northern waters regularly exceeds 20 metres, and the light from the summer sun makes everything underwater feel cinematic.

Will I Get an Underwater Photo?

Yes. At Kefi Divers, our instructors carry underwater photography kit included with every Discover Scuba Diving experience at no extra cost. Your instructor will capture photos and video of your dive, so you leave with a real memory of your first time underwater — not just a story to tell.

Can I Get Certified After Trying It?

Absolutely. Many guests who try Discover Scuba Diving decide they want to go further. The next step is the PADI Open Water Diver course — the world's most recognised scuba certification. It takes 3 to 4 days and qualifies you to dive independently, to 18 metres, anywhere in the world for life.

If you are interested, you can even complete the theory portion online before you arrive in Crete through PADI eLearning, so your time with us is spent in the water.
