The Underwater World of Almyrida
The northern Cretan coastline sits in the heart of the Mediterranean, where warm, clear water and rich fish-friendly conditions combine. Around Almyrida, visibility regularly reaches 20–25 metres, meaning you can see a long way — and there's plenty worth looking at.
Octopus
One of the most exciting — and surprisingly common — encounters on a snorkeling trip in Almyrida. Octopus tuck themselves into rocky crevices along the seabed, often perfectly camouflaged until you spot the tell-tale curl of an arm. Patient and curious by nature, they'll often stay still long enough for a proper look.
Sea Bream & Anchovies
Sea bream glide calmly through the shallows, while a silver shoal of anchovies weave and shift in the sunlight above the reef. Both are a staple of the Almyrida underwater scene and endlessly watchable.
Moray Eels
Tucked into rocky ledges and overhangs, morays are one of the more dramatic sightings on a snorkeling trip. They look fierce — but they're shy, and will usually retreat further into their hiding spots as you approach. A real highlight for first-timers.
Cuttlefish & Squid
Masters of camouflage, cuttlefish can change colour and texture in an instant. Spotting one hovering mid-shoal in the water column is one of those moments that makes you stop and stare. Squid are also present in the waters off the northern Cretan coast, often seen in small groups.
Nudibranchs
Tiny, vivid, and almost otherworldly, nudibranchs are a favourite among underwater photographers. They're easy to miss if you're not looking, but once you spot your first one, you'll be scanning every rock for more.
Seahorses
Seahorses are a protected species in Greek waters, and a genuinely special sighting. Small, slow-moving, and perfectly camouflaged among seagrass and rocky outcrops — finding one feels like discovering a secret.
Stingrays
Stingrays are occasionally spotted resting on sandy patches of the seabed around Almyrida. They're calm and unhurried — as long as you give them space, they'll go about their business entirely unbothered by your presence.
Mediterranean Barracuda
Sleek, silver, and surprisingly large — barracuda are an impressive sight in the water. They tend to hover in loose groups and are occasionally curious about snorkelers. More inquisitive than threatening.
Grouper
Grouper are a protected species and a sign of a healthy reef. Stocky, territorial, and surprisingly bold — they'll often hold their ground even when you look. A great encounter for snorkelers and divers alike.
Sea Turtles
Sea turtles pass through the waters off Almyrida and the wider Chania coastline — but we'll be honest: they're not a guarantee. When one appears, it's a genuinely special moment. The kind that people talk about for years. If you're lucky enough to encounter one, give it space and enjoy the experience.
