If you've ever peered over the side of a boat into the crystal-clear waters off the northern coast of Crete and wondered what lies beneath — this guide is for you.

Almyrida is one of the most beautiful and accessible snorkeling destinations in the Chania region, and you don't need any experience to enjoy it. Here's everything you need to know before you dive in.

Why Almyrida Is Perfect for Snorkeling

The northern coast of Crete offers some of the clearest, calmest waters in the Mediterranean. In Almyrida, visibility regularly reaches 20–25 metres, and summer sea temperatures sit comfortably between 22°C and 28°C — warm enough to explore without a wetsuit, though we provide one if you'd like extra comfort.

The underwater landscape here is rich and varied: ancient rock formations, colourful reef fish, octopus, sea urchins, and the occasional surprise. It's the kind of place that turns first-timers into lifelong snorkeling fans.

Do I Need Any Experience?

None at all. Our snorkeling trips in Almyrida are designed for complete beginners. Before we set off, we give you a full briefing on how to use your mask, snorkel, and fins — and we stay with you throughout the trip.

If you're comfortable floating in the sea, you're ready to snorkel with us.

What's Included?

We take care of everything so you can focus on the experience:

All equipment — mask, snorkel, fins, and wetsuit if needed

Full safety briefing before entering the water

Guided boat trip along the northern Cretan coastline

Professional underwater photos and video — included free, so you can relive every moment

The trip lasts around 3 hours on the water, giving you plenty of time to explore at a relaxed pace.

What Will I See?

The waters around Almyrida and the wider Chania coastline are home to a surprising variety of marine life. On a typical snorkeling trip with Kefi Divers, you might encounter:

Octopus tucked into rocky crevices

Colourful reef fish darting through the shallows

Sea urchins and starfish on the seabed

Ancient rock formations shaped over thousands of years

And if you're lucky — a sea turtle passing through (a rare and magical sighting)

What Should I Bring?

Very little — we handle the gear. Just pack:

Swimsuit

Towel

Reef-safe sunscreen (to protect Crete's marine ecosystem)

A sense of adventure

Is It Safe?

Safety is our top priority at Kefi Divers. We keep our groups small — a maximum of 4 participants per instructor — so you always have expert attention close at hand. Our instructors are PADI-certified with extensive knowledge of the local waters around Almyrida and the northern Cretan coast.

Snorkeling is suitable for most people, including children. It is not recommended during pregnancy, for which we suggest a boat excursion instead.

Advance booking is recommended, especially during peak season in July and August when spots fill up quickly. Outside of summer, shorter notice is usually fine.
