If you're planning a family holiday in Crete and your child has been asking about scuba diving, the answer is almost certainly yes — and it might be easier (and more magical) than you think.
At Kefi Divers in Almyrida , we welcome children from as young as 8 years old into the underwater world. Here's everything parents need to know.
What's the Minimum Age for Scuba Diving?
We offer three pathways depending on your child's age:
Ages 8–9: PADI Bubblemaker — A dedicated scuba experience for younger children, conducted at a maximum depth of 2 metres with a 1:1 instructor-to-child ratio. Booked as part of our Discover Scuba Diving programme.
Ages 10+: Discover Scuba Diving (DSD) — Our introductory dive experience. No certification needed. Maximum 2 students per instructor.
Ages 15+: PADI Open Water Diver — The full certification course, valid for life and recognised worldwide.
PADI Bubblemaker (Ages 8–9)
The Bubblemaker is essentially a Discover Scuba Diving experience designed specifically for younger children. Your child will learn the very basics of breathing underwater and explore the sea at a maximum depth of 2 metres — always with one instructor dedicated entirely to them (1:1 ratio).
It's a safe, shallow, and genuinely unforgettable introduction to the underwater world. Many of the kids who do Bubblemaker come back to do their full DSD at 10 — and their Open Water at 15.
Discover Scuba Diving for Kids (Ages 10+)
For children aged 10 and over, our Discover Scuba Diving programme is the perfect starting point. No experience is needed — just curiosity and a sense of adventure.
Duration: A few hours including briefing and dive
Depth: Shallow, supervised dive
Ratio: Maximum 2 students per instructor
Includes: All equipment and free professional underwater photos and videos
Your child will be briefed on the basics, practice in shallow water, and then explore the sea alongside their instructor the whole time.
Is It Safe?
Safety is our absolute priority. For every child's dive:
Full pre-dive briefing tailored to children
Small group sizes (1:1 for Bubblemaker; max 2:1 for DSD)
All equipment provided and regularly serviced
Instructors trained in emergency procedures and first aid
Shallow depths appropriate for age and experience
Children complete the same PADI medical questionnaire as adults. If you have any concerns, feel free to contact us before booking.
What Will They See?
Even at shallow depths, the waters around Almyrida are full of life. Children regularly spot octopus, colourful wrasse, sea bream, starfish, and sea urchins. The Mediterranean is calm, clear, and genuinely beautiful — the perfect place for a first dive.
PADI Open Water for Teens (Ages 15+)
For teenagers ready to take the next step, our PADI Open Water Diver course runs over 3 days and includes:
Online theory (PADI eLearning) before arrival
Confined water sessions in a swimming pool
Open water dives in the Mediterranean
Certification is valid for life and recognised worldwide — a brilliant achievement for any young diver.
