Summer is peak season in Almyrida — and for good reason. Warm water, exceptional visibility, and reliably calm afternoons make June, July, and August some of the best diving months of the year on Crete's north coast.

Best time to dive: Morning or early afternoon (before the afternoon meltemi picks up)
Visibility & sea state
Summer visibility in Almyrida is consistently excellent — 20–25m is the norm, with 30m+ on the flattest days. Thermal stratification settles in by June, which means cleaner, clearer water at depth.
The main thing to watch in summer is the meltemi — the seasonal north wind that can pick up in the afternoons, particularly in July and August. We schedule dives in the morning or early afternoon to make the most of the calmer conditions. On the rare days the meltemi is strong, we move to sheltered sites or reschedule.
Water temperature & exposure
This is the warmest time of year to dive in Crete. Surface temperatures reach 26–28°C in July and August, with temperatures at depth staying around 24°C. A 3mm shorty is comfortable for most divers; a 3mm full suit if you run cold.
No hood or gloves needed — this is Mediterranean summer diving at its best.
Marine life sightings
Summer brings the full cast of Almyrida's underwater residents out in force:
Octopus are active and highly visible on reefs and rocky seabeds
Cuttlefish are abundant through June before tapering off in August
Barracuda schools patrol Koutalas Reef throughout the season
Dusky grouper are reliably spotted at Elephant Cave
Amberjack and occasional tuna passes in June and early July
Lionfish and scorpionfish are more active in warmer water — your briefing will cover what to look out for
Seahorse sightings are possible but rare. Monk seal encounters at Elephant Cave are occasional and never guaranteed — but always unforgettable when they happen.

Elephant Cave: Protected and consistently excellent all summer — one of our most popular summer dives.
Tugboat Nestor: Warm, clear water makes this wreck dive particularly rewarding in summer.
Booking advice for summer
July and August are our busiest months. We keep group sizes small — a maximum of 4 divers per instructor — which means spaces fill up quickly. We strongly recommend booking at least a few days in advance, and ideally a week or more if you have specific dates in mind.
Looking ahead to autumn
As September approaches, water temperatures stay warm (often 26°C+) but the crowds thin out and the meltemi eases. Autumn is many divers' favourite season — if you have flexibility, it's worth considering.
